Week 6

Week 6 is one of the most unforgettable weeks for me. Unfortunately,   In Yemen the situation seems not quite quiet and unstable these days. Last week, the electricity pillars have been exploded and the Internet was down for two days.   It really drove me crazy and I felt obsoletely frustrated.  Although all the problems that I faced this week, I tried to pull myself together in order to focus on this week’s work.
Anyway, I have never used PowerPoint in my class and it was really challenging to me to create one.  I did really enjoy it a lot.  I think I will use it in my class for this term for the final oral exam. My students will do a presentation with the PowerPoint. I learned are that slides have to be concise, interactive, illustrated, numbered, informative, and not be read like a book.
Regarding to the final project Step 5:  Implement Technology Change in my Class, I think all the skills have studied so far the WebQuest Development, the PowerPoint Creation and the Alternative Assessment/ Rubrics Creation will be great step for finding interactive solutions for the problems that we face in our class. I am really looking forward to learning more and more.

  1. Hello Salah,

It's really nice to find out that you have enjoyed Week 6 so much! :) It seems that you have found out a lot of new things this time, especially related to PowerPoint. This is always great as I believe your students will benefit a lot and their learning process will be enriched with your amazing presentations and creative ideas for in- and out-of-class work! :)

I do like your idea of asking your students to use PowerPoint for their presentations. You will see how creative they are and how good they are at this. My students always use PowerPoint, Prezi or any other presentation tool when they give their presentations as part of their project-based learning. These are great classes and most of them enjoy this, and learn the language at the same time. I have to add though that we have a short two-week course on "How to give Presentations" where we learn how to create slides, what can be placed there, what shouldn't, what the role of voice, gestures and intonation is, etc. We have video material for this and I use various simulation techniques to practice before the presentation session. Hence, I do believe your students will love the idea of using PowerPoint for their presentations. :)

Have you eventually decided on what particular problem you will try to solve and which interactive tool you will use to deal with it? Have you also opted for WebQuests as the majority of our groupmates?

Wish you luck and lots of new discoveries in this exciting learning process! :)

    Best wishes,

    Jurga.

  2. Hello, Salah, Sorry to hear about the internet being down, as it really affects our performance here in the course. Glad to see everything is back to normal now, but I understand your frustration.

Although you haven't used PowerPoint in your classes, I'm sure you've explored the possibilities we have in the classroom to use it. I've used PPT just as a visual prompt, but I figure I felt the same as you when I tried to include the interactive features. My end result was rather simple, and too short, but I hope I managed to at least use some of those features correctly.

Asking your students to use PPT is an excellent idea, in my opinion. If you help them and watch their work closely, you'll find what motivates them and how they organize their ideas for a presentation, and also, you'll get to see what they like and the way the interact with each other. So much to be observed when students are given this independence! I'd like to hear from you if/when your students create their own PPT, I'm sure it'll be a wonderful experience!

    Regards,

    Lupita.
